Vierra Canyon Road: Monterey County Approved $1.2 Million Extension of Resurfacing Project

VIERRA CANYON, Monterey County — October 29, 2026. Road conditions along Vierra Canyon Road are the subject of a separate, site-specific project in the county’s Measure AA program. The Board of Supervisors adopted RES 26-073 on May 19, 2026, providing an additional $1.2 million to expand the work by approximately 1.1 miles.

Which part of Vierra Canyon Road?

County Public Works describes the goal as extending pavement treatment so that it runs without gaps from State Route 156 to the end of the county-maintained road. The extension is additional to the project’s earlier scope; the 1.1 miles is not necessarily the entire road length or the entire project cost.

How did the funding move forward?

After the February 3 Measure AA project discussions, the county’s standing committee reviewed pavement priorities on April 23 and recommended expanding Vierra Canyon Road. Supervisors subsequently passed the related May budget resolution. That resolution also funded a distinct San Benancio Road improvement and engineering work on a Scenic Road protection structure. These are separate work sites, even though the authorizing board vote covered all three.

Is the road closed right now?

The May funding decision is not a current closure announcement. It does not verify that construction began, that all lanes have been repaved, or that any particular closure or detour applies on October 29. Travelers should check the county’s official road advisories and follow signs on the roadway.

What can neighbors track?

Residents of Vierra Canyon and adjoining rural areas can request the executed resurfacing contract, exact mileposts, drainage and shoulder work plans, construction schedule and final inspection results. The project is intended to improve a county-maintained corridor; the resolution is not an authorization to widen the road or develop adjacent property.
